Thrombocytopenia sometimes runs in families and this would suggest a possible genetic link. Familial thrombocytopenia is very heterogeneous since there are several different types of familial thrombocytopenia (although we cannot tell them apart at present).

Our aim is to collect DNA from families with low platelets, search for genetic changes that might be causing the low platelet count. If we identify a gene (or genes) we can look for alterations of the genes within the typical non-familial thrombocytopenias.
