Some research suggests a possible connection between H. pylori infection and ITP.
So 2 weeks ago I asked my GP for the test when I have my bloods done. Last Monday I had my FBC done (platelets 39 dropped 5 in week) and blood taken for the test for H-pylori. Yesterday, my GP phoned to say the test was positive. It took a week because the Path Lab wait till they have a batch before they do the test.
Now I am on Metronidazole, Lansoprazole and Amoxicillin for 7 days. Even if it doesn’t help my ITP, I might be able to stop taking Ranitidine which I have to for the week. Just hoping the meds don’t affect my counts.

I will post again when the infection has gone

Good luck with the treatment Ted, I've heard it can be hard on the stomach.

I had the test for H.Pylori too and it was negative.

Hi Morag

It’s a stomach bug, this page explains it all,

http://www.patient.co.uk/health/Helicobacter-Pylori-and-Stomach-Pain.htm

It also says that if you have ITP then you should be offered the test, I requested it after reading about it on another forum

So far so good with the medication, I have had no side effects as yet.

I have had no problems with taking the meds for H-Pylori. Hoping it has gone, I will request a further test in a month. Stopping taking Ranitidine and see how I feel then.
Platelet count on Monday was a nice 55, it could be because of the antibiotics, only time will tell.
I am beginning to think that my platelets have settled down again to what they were before April 2009, above the 30 mark. I still get stressed waiting for the blood test results though. Seeing heamo next Wednesday not seen him in 5 weeks, it was every 2 weeks not long ago.

Saw haemo yesterday, platelets are 59. I told him I had the H-Pylori test and had been treated for it. He was taken aback and looked amazed, and asked how, I told him I requested it with my GP when I had my bloods done. I also said that research suggested that it can have an affect on platelets, he said yes on some people. To be honest he didn’t seem to know anything about it.

The next time you have your bloods done ask your GP for the test, it could be H-Pylori that’s affecting your ITP. H-Pylori can cause stomach ulcers and at the worst stomach cancer so its worth being tested.

Fact: Barry J Marshall got the Nobel prize in 1995 for finding H-Pylori and what it did to the body.

Good luck to you all.
