Hi Laney
My main problem was very heavy menstrual bleeding when I was diagnosed with ITP earlier this year. I ended up in A & E twice with it as it was so severe. I had the Mirena coil fitted last month and it has helped immensely and caused me no problems at all with my ITP. I checked with my Haematologist before going to see my Gynae and she said that it would have no negative effect on my platelet count. Since having it fitted, my count has stabilised to around 50, so it certainly doesn't do any harm!
Hope this helps?

Hi Laney
I will keep my fingers crossed, but there will be no need as you will be absolutely fine
My sister has had the mirena coil for 5 years and has not had a period in that time...i've had it fitted for just over a month and am still bleeding slightly, but nothing like it was....it's been amazing for me!The gynae said it will settle down soon though so i'm happy!

Hi Laney,
I'd recommend Mirena Coil 100%
(I wrote detailed info about it in one of my previous posts, hope it's helpful)
All the best

Hi
Do you guys notice a correlation between a particular platelet count level and getting heavy periods? I'm just wondering whether it's only when platelets are really low (under 30). And to symptoms vary?
So far I'm getting really heavy periods when under a count of 10, and then as my count goes up (with steroid treatment), I get some break-through bleeding (still under a count of 50).
Thanks! |

| I used to think my heavy bleeding was related to my ITP, but my platelet count has risen over the summer to 100K, and I still have heavy and long monthly bleeding, so I guess that's not it. |

Hi Norita,
I used to get very heavy periods on both high or low counts so I had to find a way of contolling these as it was very draining experience to juggle both problems together. I've written about my solution in previous posts.
Hope you'll find the right way for you.
Best wishes

Hi
Thanks. That's helpful to know. I've always had relatively heavy periods. I wonder if there is any general correlation or if it's a coincidence. I also noticed that when my platelets went up to 200+ (while on steroids, even a low dose) my period was blissfully light and short (and I realised how much easier it must be for people who naturally have light periods!). But that was probably the medication.
